Getting Started

Does it cost anything to use this site?   There is no cost for posting listings, or for buying goods or services. Feel free to list goods or services for neighbors or friends.

In the future we may charge for bulk quantities of listings, or may use on-page advertising to support the site.

How do I register?

I can't log in!   We use ''cookies'' to log you in, which some browser security settings block. You might try adding our site to the ''Trusted sites'' in your browser. In Internet Explorer, this is through Tools >> Internet options >> security >> Trusted sites; steps may be similar in other browsers. Note that you may need to add both www.allsorta.com and allsorta.com for this to work consistently.

My business (not home-based) offers goods and services. Can I post?   Our focus is on providing an outlet for individuals and small businesses. So, if your business has more than a few employees, we will likely ask you to advertise elsewhere. Feel free to ask. We recognize that this is a gray line, so it may be subject to change over time.

What is my username (or password)?   To have your username and password emailed to you, go here. In the ''Need Help?'' section near the bottom of the page, enter your email address, then press ''Go''.

Why are you closed on Sunday?   Yes, that is unusual for a web business. Our thoughts are here.

Buying

Do you provide any help against fraud?    While we cannot offer any guarantee, we do take a couple of simple steps to prevent fraud:
1. We provide a feedback system (see the tab on each user's page) where feedback can be left about a transaction.
2. We also have a page dealing with general scams.
3. At the top of each of our listing pages, we warn buyers not to send money without checking the complaints page.

This won't eliminate instances of fraud, but we believe it helps reduce them. It is still up to each buyer to decide whether or not to send money to a particular seller. We recommend you send something traceable -- like a check, postal money order, or PayPal payment -- made out to a person at a street address (rather than cash to a P.O. box). While we haven't tried them, there are escrow services that, for a fee, will hold your payment until the merchandise is shipped (see information on eBay).

Helpful tip: Copy and paste the listing into your email to the seller/provider.   Why? The seller/provider may hide the listing after you respond, which will prevent you from going back and seeing the original post. This way, you both can refer to the listing if any questions come up about what was offered.

How do I buy items or services?   Registration is not required to buy items or services. Items are offered by individual sellers/providers -- click on the username at the end of each listing to see the seller/provider's page and any other items they have for sale or services they are offering. Contact them directly to purchase items or services (get their email by clicking the link below their name, or their phone if they have listed a number).

How do I check out a seller/provider?   We have a reputation/feedback system, but as this is a new service, ratings will be limited for a while. New sellers/providers may not yet have entries, so you should: At the end of the day, transactions are always ''buyer beware'', but our experience has been that the overwhelming majority of transactions are honest and uneventful.

How do I pay with PayPal?   If the seller/provider's page displays a PayPal button, they accept PayPal. After you have confirmed with them that the desired item/service is still available and have agreed on the price, click the button to connect to the PayPal site, where you can make the payment. Note that AllSorta doesn't track or monitor the payment in any way, so the transaction is between you, the seller/provider, and PayPal.

I can't find what I need!   While we can't fully endorse these sites, you might try eBay, Recycler, Craigslist, Half, or Etsy. If you are looking for homeschool material, try our sister site Homeschool Classifieds, which we do fully endorse!

I've sent money, but have not received my item!   We suggest doing some of the following. You may want to email the seller that you are taking these steps, to give them a final opportunity to make things right:

The seller wants me to use PayPal's ''Personal gift/personal payment'' option.   Don't do it. It is both unwise (there is no dispute protection) and dishonest (you are buying an item or a service). If a seller is suggesting you do this, they are not concerned with integrity; find another seller.

What do the condition ratings/abbreviations mean?   Our standard condition ratings (and some helpful abbreviations) are described here. There is also a link to this page in the explanatory paragraph at the top of each page of listings.

What is ppd?   Ppd means that shipping (in the US) is included in the seller's price. If you are selling and you want the buyer to pay shipping, you can choose that option when you list your item, and the ppd will not appear.

Will the sellers ship to Canada (or overseas)?   The items on the board are offered by individual sellers, who may or may not ship to Canada (or overseas) -- ask them.

Posting a listing

Can I ask a buyer to use PayPal's ''Personal gift/personal payment'' option?   Not if you are honest -- you are selling an item. Don't try to cheat Paypal's system; either build the PayPal fee into your price, or ask for some other form of payment.

Do you delete listings you think may be duplicates?   Yes, we delete apparent duplicate items because some users post more than once. Deletion is done very quickly, without a great deal of examination, as there are many new items each day. If you genuinely have duplicate items, you have several options:

Preferred -- A single listing, with the single item price, perhaps with wording like ''2 copies avail.'' or ''Two to sell'' at the end. This is less work for you, and won't be in danger of deletion.

Alternate method -- Separate ads, with some distinguishing wording -- i.e., different condition descriptions, or ''copy 1'' vs. ''copy 2''. Make sure we don't think it is the same item!

How do I edit or delete an item?

How do I post a listing?   After you've registered (see above):

How do I post a picture of an item?   Click the ''Images'' link at the end of each listing. This will bring up our image editor, where you can manage up to four images.

How long should I wait on a buyer before moving on to the next?   If you didn't set a deadline and they've left you hanging, you may want to email them and give them one day to provide proof of payment. You may also want to put something in your initial email response -- to the effect that you need to be notified of payment within some time period or you will make the item available to others.

Is it reasonable to wait to ship until after a check clears?    It is very appropriate to wait to send material until payment actually clears (i.e., cashed money order or cashier's check, or cleared check). This may mean waiting several days for the buyer to get to the bank or post office; waiting several more days for the mail to arrive; and, in the case of a personal check, waiting a week or so for the check to clear. If you do much buying and selling, you may want to consider a PayPal or similar account, which allows an instant, secure payment with a substantial level of confidence.

Is there a preferred way to ship items?   We suggest that you compare the Post office, UPS, and FedEx.

Is there some way to check on a buyer?

My images take too long to upload!   Unless you have a very fast connection, uploading a large image may time out. We suggest using a photo editing package or app to reduce images sizes before uploading. See our page about this here.

Why do my listings keep disappearing?   Listings may be deleted if they violate our conditions of use, involve materials that cannot legally be resold, contain excessive CAPS, repeat information already provided in another field, don't contain normal spaces, or commit one of various other infractions described on the listing form.

We don't mean to be restrictive about format, but we believe our listings are easy to scan precisely because we try hard to standardize them. It would be nice to notify users of offending listings, but there are simply too many to make that practical.

Why do you require an image for your listings?   One of our goals is to create a GREAT buying experience, so that buyers have a reason to return. Part of that is insuring that our listings have sufficient detail. Our test of that is, can the average buyer make a decision without contacting you for more information?

Both an image (a stock image is OK) and a good description are, in our opinion, part of that. So, going forward, listings will be hidden until you are able to upload an image. Listings that lack a sufficiently detailed description (for a buyer to make an informed decision) will be deleted.

We understand that a few users lack the technology to add images to their listings. In most cases, you can find a manufacturer's or publisher's image to use from the web. Just put a disclaimer in your listing that this is a ''Representative image'' and describe any differences. If that is not an option, we would (regretfully) direct you back to eBay, Craigslist, or Etsy.

After the transaction

How do I leave feedback about a transaction?   Only registered users can leave feedback. If you are registered, log in to your page and go to the Reputation tab. If the transaction is shown, click on its ''Edit'' link to add your feedback. Otherwise click on the ''I was a buyer'' or ''I was a seller'' link (at the bottom of the page) to leave feedback.

How do I read the feedback others have left for me?   Go to your page, but do not log in. Click on the Feedback tab. Click the ''[Details]'' link at the end of any transaction line.

How soon should I delete a listing after the sale?   We suggest that you hide the listing, in case there is any misunderstanding with the buyer. Once both parties are happy with the transaction, you can delete the listing.

Managing your account

Can I put a link to my offsite store/eBay listings in my profile?   We plan to allow you (shortly) to put a link to an offsite store in your profile information. However, if we receive a lot of ''link spam'', this may change in the future.

Can I temporarily hide items (pending sales, going on vacation)?   Items for sale and services offered can be temporarily hidden by clicking on the Hide this?'' checkbox on the item's form. Currently, you will need to do this for each item individually, making this method somewhat impractical if you have many items. If the sale falls through, or when you return from vacation, just uncheck the box.

How do I change my username/email/info/password?

How do I renew my listings?    Important note: Listings must be almost a month old to be renewed (we are trying to discourage ''renew-every-day'' behavior, because we think it is neither helpful to buyers, nor a very good use of sellers'/providers' time). The system automatically removes listings that haven't been updated or renewed in more than two months. So, if you renew about once a month, you'll maintain your listings and they will appear as new items at that time.

How do I show or remove a PayPal button?   If you have a PayPal account (you'll need to visit paypal.com to set that up), you can add a button on your page to take a buyer directly to PayPal to pay you. To remove the PayPal button from your page, clear the ''PayPal account'' field.

My emails to the seller/buyer aren't answered -- are they getting them?
